Netapp SME and single mailbox recovery vs native data protection

Hello all

We currently have a 2 node DAG that uses Netapp storage. With the Netapp i can take scheduled snapshots of the databases using snap manager for Exchange, i can then connect to these snapshots using another Netapp tool called single mailbox recovery. I can use this tool to restore an entire mailbox or individual email items. I know in Exchange 2010 i can enable an entire database for "single item recovery" to restore items that were purged from the deleted items folder, i can also set a time threshold on the database for deleted mailbox . I'm jsut trying to understand the best method to use for restoring data?

I also have legal discovery requirements i must adhear to. I know i can use the native built in features of Exchange 2010 to perform legal discover, but in order for the native features to be fully effective i would need to turn on single item recovery or legal hold. With Netapp's tool i can connect to one of the sanpshots and use the single mailbox recovery tool to perform legal discovery.

As you can see i am trying to understand a prefered method to perform legal discovery and to be able to easily restore purged items and purged mailboxes

Many thanks
